My Process
TV Repair
I'm aware that the price of replacement TV's has shrunk significantly. And smaller flat screen TVs can be replaced for not much more than a full tank of gas.
For that reason I need to make certain that my customers are aware of the costs and challenges with repairing your TV, before you carry your set to me.
When you call please be prepared with your Make, Model # and the problem you are experiencing.
That information will allow me to give you a picture of what it will take to repair your TV or whether your TV can be repaired at all. When dropped off for repair, you will be given an upper limit and we will have an agreement that if your TV can be repaired for a price under which,it will be repaired and you will be called when the TV is completed
If the price looks like it will be more, or if the TV is beyond repair I will reach out with either a revised estimate or the bad news that the set cannot be repaired. I will then reassemble your set and you can come to pick it up for a diagnostic charge
Combi and combination units can be like repairing two unique devices and charges will be consumate with whether one or more of the individual devices have problems.
- Diagnotic Rates
- Smaller than 40" $30
- Flat Screen TVs Up to 65" $40
- Flat Screen TVs Over 65" $60
- CRT based TVs Rear Projection excluded $75 up front in cash to be applied either to final repair or diagnostic.
VCR Repair
Consumer VCRs were manufactured between 1977 and 2016
VCRs are a electro-mechanical device that require a number of specialty mechanical and electronic parts to service properly. While there are some generic components that can be found new or New Old Stock, all propriatary parts for specific models went out of production shortly after the manufacturer completed production of the specific model
For that reason VCRs can be challenging to service and to a large degree unless exact replacement parts can be found for your model, un-repairable.
I charge a $50 cash, up front, diagnostic fee on VCRs manufactured after 2000. I reserve the right to change this fee based on the age or condition of the VCR. This fee will be applied either to final repair or diagnostic. We will set an maximum limit cost of repair of no more than $100
If the price to repair your unit appears to be more than what we agreed to, I will call with an estimate, or the bad news if the unit is beyond repair.
Home Audio Repair
Home Audio can include everything from ultra high end modern pieces and highly collectable antique units to bargin basement import models that are easily replaced, and every variable in between. So for that reason my choice to take audio equipment will be determained by the individual piece, its intrinsic value and what repairs need to be done
Modern AV receivers can be highly complex and just disassembling them for a diagnostic can take more that an hour and require expensive specialized jumper kits and propriatary literature. Also AV technology has advanced so quickly that your home theater system might already be obsolete and parts impossible to come by. This doesn't mean they cannot be repaired. But it does mean that repairs can be more challenging and costly.
Repair of vintage equipment will be discussed with you on a per piece basis and I will determine what your expectations are before accepting the unit. I leave complete re-capping and other trendy pursuits to the hobbiest crowd. I will diagnose and repair the problems that I find with the unit and charge according to parts costs and labor time
Minimum labor for all home audio is $100 with a $200 maximum plus parts
CD, DVD and DVDr
I will accept these but as with VCRs they are electromechanical devices. There are many repairs that can still be performed but mechanical parts can be difficult or impossible to find
Optical pickups might be available but will have to be ordered from China in most all cases
Minimum labor for all CD and DVD units is $75 with a $120 maximum plus parts
Combination Units "Combis"
There have been a number of multifunction devices manufactured over the years. Combination TV/VCR, TV/DVD, Multifunction stereos with tape players/record players/radio tuners, combination DVD(r)/VCR, etc.
My policy regarding these units is that I may treat them as separate devices. And labor charges are adjusted accordingly
Labor rates on most combis will start at $75 with a $150 maximum depending on the amount work needed. Average around $100 plus parts
